Indigenous Rights Education Workshops
The APA mainly carries out education and awareness activities to defend and promote indigenous rights, especially those related to land, the environment and self-determination. To this end the APA carries out Training of Trainers and Community Capacity Building workshops in indigenous rights, mining and protected areas, among others, using policy documents and national legislation to bring an understanding of laws and policies that govern Indigenous Peoples in Guyana.
Advocacy and Campaigns
The organisation’s work in advocacy and campaigning takes place at various levels. There are community level activities such as training workshops, conferences and field visits that focus mainly on increasing the capacity of communities to deal with issues affecting them and how to advocate on their own behalf.
At the national level, the APA seeks to influence policy and legislative changes through promotion of indigenous rights as a fundamental right and through education of the public but especially the legislators and other policy decision-makers. The APA operates as a watchdog body and pressure group to ensure that policies and legislation that protect the rights of Indigenous Peoples are adopted and implemented.
Additionally, the APA works at the international level through networking with NGOs and other sympathetic organizations that promote and defend the rights of Indigenous Peoples throughout the world. The APA also attends relevant forums including those at the United Nations and Organisation of American States among others.

Gender Issues
The organization also works with indigenous women to build their capacity in fundraising, proposal writing, project management, leadership skills, advocacy and communication: and to promote discussions in dealing with the issue of domestic violence. The aim is for these women to gain the ability to advocate on their own behalf, and to empower fellow indigenous women to represent themselves.
